God’s Community Garden is currently in its tenth year of operation under the leadership of Linda Wood! The garden originally started with Bishop White at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown having three separate gardens for each respective Methodist church on Aquidneck Island. Linda became the coordinator of the garden in 2008 and had a larger vision for what the garden could be and do for the community. She started with a small grant to build a shed. Grants covered the funding of future infrastructure for the garden as well – including a well, an irrigation system, and three greenhouses. Originally, the food was distributed to other organizations in the area, but eventually the produce at God’s Community Garden was then distributed through our free farm stands. This year we have added the additional farm stand in Newport at the Florence Gray Center, a grant-funded initiative.
God’s Community Garden has now had ten years thriving through grants, donations, and our beloved volunteers. Through these efforts in our first ten years, we have been able to donate 19 tons of food to those in need on Aquidneck Island! Here’s to ten more!
